Get the handout: 16 gestures that help your child learn to talk.

Meaningful gestures develop before speech. This is the first type of intentional communication your child uses. Using gestures helps your child learn they can share an idea with another person.

Your child needs lots of examples of words they could use in an activity. When you say a word that matches their gesture, you are helping build a strong foundation for communication.

Today’s activity: Watch for actions your child uses that could be used to express a meaning. Respond to the actions as if they have meaning. This shapes the use of a meaningful gesture.
